Where to Find and How to Tame a Wolf in Minecraft 1.21

Wolves inhabit forests and various types of taiga. They can spawn on grass, dirt, or snow blocks. In 10% of cases, a puppy is born instead of an adult beast. In the new version of the game, a wolf's coat color directly depends on the biome it lives in.

Wolf Behavior and States
In the game, a wolf can be in one of three states, which are easy to identify by its appearance:
- Wild: Does not attack the player first. Hunts sheep, rabbits, foxes, and skeletons. If you hold a bone or meat in your hand, it will tilt its head curiously to the side.
- Hostile: Becomes aggressive if you hit it or a pack member. Its eyes glow red, and its tail goes straight. It will pursue the offender until they perish.
- Tamed: A collar appears around its neck. It protects its owner and teleports to them if the distance exceeds 12 blocks.
Interesting Fact: Each wolf has its own sound variation (7 voice types in total: from "pug-like" snuffling to a grumpy bark), which is assigned randomly and does not depend on the variant.
How to Tame and Command a Wolf
- Taming: Use bones. Each bone has a 1/3 chance of success. Usually, it takes no more than 12 bones. Upon success, hearts will appear, the wolf will sit down, and a red collar will appear.
- Commands: Right-clicking (RMB) makes the wolf sit. A sitting dog will not follow you or teleport, even through portals.
- Customization: If you hold any dye and click on a tamed wolf, its collar will change color.
What to Feed a Wolf in Minecraft
A dog's health is indicated by its tail: if it's high, the dog is healthy; if it's down or you hear whimpering, it needs to be fed. A tamed wolf has 2.5 times more health than a player.
| Food | Health Restoration | Effect on Puppies |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked Beef / Porkchop | 16 units | Speeds up growth by 10% |
| Cooked Chicken | 12 units | Speeds up growth by 10% |
| Rotten Flesh | 8 units | Speeds up growth by 10% |
| Raw Meat (any) | 4–6 units | Speeds up growth by 10% |
| Raw Fish | Does not heal | No effect |
- Features: Wolves can eat rotten flesh and raw chicken without taking damage or getting food poisoning.
- Breeding: If you feed two full-health tamed wolves any meat, a puppy will appear.
- Inheritance: The puppy inherits the parents' collar color. If the parents have different colors, they can be mixed.
Wolf Armor
Armor fully protects your pet from external damage (explosions, arrows, falls) until its durability runs out.
- Find an Armadillo: They live in the savanna.
- Obtain Scutes: Use a brush on an armadillo to get its scutes.
- Crafting: Combine 6 armadillo scutes on a crafting table.
- Equipping: Hold the armor in your hand and right-click (RMB) on your wolf.
Important: Armor does not protect against drowning, freezing, potion effects, or the /kill command. It can only be removed using shears.
