How to Enable Cheats to Use Commands
The /gamemode command only functions in worlds where cheats are enabled.
- In Singleplayer: When creating a world, toggle "Allow Cheats: ON." If the world is already created, press Esc -> "Open to LAN" -> "Allow Cheats: ON" -> "Start LAN World."
- On a Server: Operator permissions (OP) are required, which are granted via the console command /op player_name.
How to Quickly Change Modes via Hotkeys
Java Edition features a "quick-switch" menu that allows for instant mode swapping without typing.
- Hold down the F3 key.
- While holding F3, press F4 once.
- An on-screen menu will appear. Tap F4 repeatedly to cycle through the modes: Survival, Creative, Adventure, or Spectator.
- Release the keys to confirm the selection.
Note: The game remembers your last selection. A quick press of F3 + F4 will instantly swap you between your two most recent game modes (e.g., toggling between Creative and Survival).

How to Switch to Creative
A mode for building with access to all blocks and invulnerability.

How to Change Another Player's Mode on a Server
Administrators can change the mode of any player currently online. Simply append the player's username after the mode name.
Examples of Use:
- /gamemode creative Steve — Sets Steve's mode to Creative.
- /gamemode survival @a — Returns every player on the server to Survival.
- /gamemode spectator @p — Switches the nearest player to Spectator mode.
Troubleshooting: If the Command Fails
There are several common reasons for command errors:
- Lack of Permissions: If a red "You do not have permission to use this command" message appears, cheats are disabled or you lack admin rights on the server.
- Version Differences: Bedrock Edition (Mobile, Consoles, Windows 10) supports shorthand like /gamemode s (survival) or /gamemode c (creative). Java Edition does not support these abbreviations.
- Typos: Minecraft commands are case-sensitive and spacing must be exact. All commands should be written in lowercase.
