Slime and XP Farm in Minecraft 1.21+: Step-by-Step Guide
A step-by-step guide to building a compact Slime and XP Farm in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21+. Design featuring Oozing splash potions and…
Traditional slime farming requires finding rare "slime chunks" deep underground or spending long nights hunting in swamps. The Minecraft 1.21 (Tricky Trials) update fundamentally changed this mechanic by introducing the new Oozing effect. This effect causes any entity to spawn 2 to 4 medium slimes upon death. This guide covers the construction of a compact XP & Slime Farm, based on Adnan Aslam's tutorial for version 1.21+, which yields about 4 stacks of slimeballs per minute.
Preparation and Required Materials
Building this farm requires a minimal amount of resources easily obtainable in the mid-game. All components are listed in the table:
Resource | Quantity | Note |
|---|---|---|
Building Blocks | 1 stack | Any solid blocks for the frame and chamber walls |
Cobblestone Wall | 8 | Creates a safe collection and viewing area |
Trapdoor | 2 | To hold the snow golems and separate farm levels |
Dispenser | 2 | One for dispensing water, the second for the potion |
Observer | 1 | Creates a short pulse when toggling the lever |
Lever | 1 | Serves as the main on/off switch for the system |
Redstone Dust | 1 | Connects the observer to both dispensers |
Water Bucket | 1 | Damage source for quickly killing snow golems |
Splash Potion of Oozing | 1–9 | Applies the key effect to multiply slimes |
Shears | 1 | Needed for shearing pumpkins off snow golems |
Chest | 2 | Forms a double chest for storing the drops |
Hopper | 2 | Automatically collects snowballs, pumpkins, and slime |
Step 1. Setting Up the Collection System and Kill Chamber
Place two chests side by side to combine them into a double storage system.
Connect two hoppers to the back of the chests so they direct collected items into the chest.
Build two-block-high cobblestone walls around the hoppers. This forms a small 2x1 block shaft. The gaps between the walls allow you to safely attack the slimes with a sword without letting them jump out.

Step 2. Building the Snow Golem Chamber and Installing Automation
Right above the hoppers, place a trapdoor on the second block level. It separates the collection chamber from the upper tier where the snow golems will stand.
Place a dispenser facing inward above the block above the trapdoors. Put shears inside it.
Behind the block located under the dispenser, place a downward-facing observer. Put redstone dust on top of it.
Install a dispenser under the observer. Place a lever on it.

Step 3. Running and Activating the Farm Cycle
Build 24 snow golems in the prepared upper chamber. To do this, sequentially place two snow blocks and a carved pumpkin.
Activate the lever to shear all the pumpkins.
After that, turn off the lever. Throw the potion at the snow golems.
Open the trapdoor under them so they fall into the water.
The slimes will fall into the lower collection chamber, where you can quickly finish them off with a sword. It is recommended to use a sword with Looting III enchantments to increase the slime yield.

Technical Details and Oozing Effect Mechanics
The Oozing effect is part of the Tricky Trials mechanics in Minecraft 1.21. To get a Splash Potion of Oozing, you must brew a slime block into an awkward potion on a brewing stand, and then add gunpowder to create the splash form.

When any mob (including snow golems) dies with this effect, the game generates 2–4 medium slimes in its place. This mechanic ignores standard natural mob spawn caps in a chunk. Because snow golems take damage from contact with water (1 damage point per tick), they die almost instantly.
Snow golems are also a fully renewable resource. Creating one snow golem requires 8 snowballs (2 snow blocks) and 1 pumpkin. After shearing, the pumpkin is completely returned, and upon death, each snow golem drops up to 15 snowballs. This fully covers the snow costs for creating the next batch of snow golems.
Advanced Options and Method Comparisons
This farm is an example of targeted use of the new status effects. Other mob sources can be used instead of snow golems, but snow golems remain the most profitable due to the pumpkin return mechanic.
A comparison of the efficiency of different mobs for Oozing farms is given in the table:
Mob Type | Creation Cost | Kill Speed | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
Snow Golem | Low (2 snow blocks) | Instant (in water) | Pumpkin returns when sheared |
Chicken | Extremely low (from eggs) | Medium (requires lava/water) | Possibility of fully automated spawning |
Silverfish | Low (via spawner) | Fast | High mob density per block |
A comparative analysis of traditional slime harvesting methods and the Oozing effect farm is presented in the table:
Method | Build Difficulty | Productivity | Location Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
Oozing Farm | Low (minimum redstone) | Maximum (4 stacks/min) | None (buildable in any biome) |
Chunk-based Farm | High (digging large areas) | High (with full cave clearing) | Requires finding a specific chunk |
Swamp-based Farm | Medium | Low (depends on time of day) | Works only in swamps at night |
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Using normal pumpkins instead of carved ones. Only carved pumpkins or Jack o'Lanterns are suitable for creating a snow golem. A regular pumpkin will not let you create a snow golem.
Delaying turning off the lever after dispensing water. If the water isn't removed in time, it can flood the kill chamber or kill the slimes before you hit them with a sword, causing you to lose experience. Turn off the lever immediately after the snow golems die.
Building the farm in warm biomes without cooling. Snow golems melt rapidly and die directly from the temperature in Desert, Savanna, or Nether biomes. Build the farm in cold or temperate biomes, or at a high altitude.
Lack of enchantments on the sword. Although the farm generates a large number of slimes, the base item yield without Looting III enchantments will be three times lower. Always keep an enchanted weapon in your hands when killing slimes.
