Best Armor Enchantments in Minecraft
Armor enchantments in Minecraft determine how much damage reaches the player through their gear and how long the set will last in combat. This mega-guide gathers the best armor enchantments into one system: how damage reduction is calculated through EPF, which effect to put on each slot, how protective enchantments combine with each other, and where to get treasure enchantments — Mending, Swift Sneak, Soul Speed. All numbers, levels, and limits are accurate, without "approximately".
How Armor Protection Works: The EPF System
Every protection enchantment gives an item an Enchantment Protection Factor (EPF). When the player takes damage, the game sums up the EPF of all enchantments that protect against that specific type of damage, caps the sum at 20, and reduces the damage by 4% for each point. The maximum is 20 points, which means an 80% reduction.
How Much EPF Each Effect Provides
The multiplier depends on the enchantment type: for Protection it is 1 per level, for specific protection types it is 2, and for Feather Falling it is 3.
Enchantment | Max Level | EPF per Level | EPF at Max Level (1 item) | Protects Against |
Protection | IV | 1 | 4 | almost all damage |
Blast Protection | IV | 2 | 8 | explosions + knockback from them |
Fire Protection | IV | 2 | 8 | fire, lava, burn time |
Projectile Protection | IV | 2 | 8 | arrows and other projectiles |
Feather Falling | IV | 3 | 12 | falling (boots only) |
Why the Cap is 20 Points
An EPF sum over 20 adds nothing — extra levels against a specific damage type are wasted. Therefore, to protect against one type of threat, three pieces are enough: two with Blast Protection IV (8 EPF each) and one with Protection IV (4 EPF) give exactly 20 against explosions.
The 80% ceiling means there is no full invulnerability: even with maximum protection, a fraction of damage from projectiles, explosions, or magic will always go through.
Protection — The Universal Base
Protection reduces almost all damage: melee attacks, arrows, explosions, fire, falling, magic. It does not reduce only starvation, the sonic boom of a Warden, void damage, and the /kill command. The maximum level is IV. One item with Protection IV provides 4 EPF (16% against any damage), and a full set of four pieces provides 16 EPF, meaning a 64% total reduction.
The advantage of Protection is its broadness: it is the only one that works simultaneously against all sources and adds EPF to any damage type. Because of the 1 multiplier per level, it is half as strong as an equivalent against a specific threat, but it covers situations where specific protection does not apply.

Specialized Protection Enchantments
Three enchantments protect against a specific type of damage with a doubled multiplier — 2 EPF per level.
Blast Protection
Blast Protection reduces damage and knockback from explosions of creepers, TNT, End Crystals, and ghast fireballs. Level IV is 8 EPF per item.
Fire Protection
Fire Protection reduces damage from fire, lava, and fire attacks, and also shortens burn time. Level IV is 8 EPF.
Projectile Protection
Projectile Protection works against arrows, shulker bullets, and thrown tridents. Level IV is 8 EPF.
Incompatibility: Protection, Blast Protection, Fire Protection, and Projectile Protection cannot be combined on a single item. Attempting to combine them on an anvil will remove one of the enchantments. They can only work together on different armor pieces.
Because of this incompatibility, protection is applied selectively: one piece for a frequent threat (creepers, skeleton archers, working near lava), and the rest for Protection.
Feather Falling — Fall Protection
Feather Falling is an enchantment exclusively for boots. It reduces fall damage by (12 × level)%, reaching up to 48% at level IV. The EPF multiplier here is 3 per level. Feather Falling is not part of the mutually exclusive protection enchantments group, so boots can carry both Feather Falling and Protection at the same time — their effects against falling stack up.
By itself, Feather Falling IV does not reach the 80% ceiling — only 48%. But combined with Protection IV on several pieces, fall damage is cut to the limit. The effect applies not only to height: it reduces damage from End Pearl teleportation and from landing on the ground with an elytra (hitting a wall does not count).
Unlike the Potion of Slow Falling, which acts temporarily and gets consumed, Feather Falling works permanently as soon as the boots are equipped.

Utility Armor Enchantments
These enchantments do not reduce damage directly but cover specific situations.
Helmet: Respiration and Aqua Affinity
Respiration adds 15 seconds underwater per level on top of the base 15 — totaling 60 seconds at level III. Once the air runs out, every second there is a chance of not taking damage: level / (level + 1), which is 75% at III. It additionally improves underwater vision.
Aqua Affinity removes the mining penalty underwater; blocks are broken at the same speed as on land.
Boots: Movement
Depth Strider reduces water slowdown by ⅓ per level; at III you can swim as fast as you walk on land.
Frost Walker freezes water under your feet into frosted ice and nullifies damage from magma blocks. At level II the radius is wider.
Soul Speed accelerates movement on soul sand and soul soil by 61.5% at III, but slowly consumes the durability of the boots.
Leggings: Swift Sneak
Swift Sneak speeds up sneaking movement by 15% of walking speed per level. Sneaking without enchantments is 30% of walking speed, with level III it's 75%.
Depth Strider and Frost Walker are mutually exclusive — only one of them can remain on the same boots.
Thorns — Damage Reflection
Thorns gives each armor piece an independent chance of level × 15% to deal 1–4 points of damage to the attacker — either in melee or by projectile. At III this is 45% from one piece; with a full set, at least one piece triggers in about 91% of cases. The total damage per hit is capped at 4 points.
Thorns accelerates wear: the piece that triggers loses 2 additional durability points. Without Unbreaking and Mending, a set with Thorns wears out noticeably faster. Another nuance — endermen teleport away from reflected damage, which complicates fights with them and ruins farms.
Unbreaking and Mending — Set Lifespan
Unbreaking gives a chance not to consume durability when damaged. On armor, the effect is weaker than on tools: Unbreaking III extends the lifespan of a piece by about 43%.
Mending directs collected experience to repair equipped or held items — 2 durability points for every experience point. If multiple items need repairs, the experience orb goes to a random one.
Together these enchantments remove the need to craft armor anew: the set lasts indefinitely as long as the player collects experience.
Optimal Loadout per Slot
The basic configuration for survival is Protection IV on all four pieces plus utility per slot.
Slot | Primary Enchantments | Optional |
Helmet | Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III |
Chestplate | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III |
Leggings | Protection IV, Swift Sneak III, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III |
Boots | Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, Mending | Soul Speed III, Frost Walker II, Thorns III |
Such a build gives a 64% overall damage reduction and covers falling, water, and wear. Specific protection is not included here — it is added only for specific scenarios (below).

How to Apply Enchantments
Treasure enchantments — Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and both curses — do not drop from the enchanting table. They are obtained differently.
Enchantment | From Enchanting Table | Other Source |
Protection, Fire / Blast / Projectile Protection | yes | trading, loot, fishing |
Feather Falling | yes (boots) | trading, loot |
Respiration, Aqua Affinity | yes (helmet) | trading, loot |
Depth Strider | yes (boots) | trading, loot |
Thorns | I–II yes, III only via anvil | loot, trading |
Unbreaking | yes | trading, loot |
Mending | no (treasure) | trading, loot, fishing |
Frost Walker | no (treasure) | trading, loot, fishing |
Soul Speed | no (treasure) | bartering with piglins only |
Swift Sneak | no (treasure) | Ancient City chests only |
A typical path for a full set: enchant pieces on the table up to Protection IV, buy or combine books on an anvil for the rest, look for Swift Sneak in Ancient City chests, and Soul Speed — in bartering with piglins.

Alternative Loadouts by Scenario
The basic loadout is modified by swapping Protection IV on one piece with specific protection.
Against creepers and crystals (PvP): one piece — Blast Protection IV, the rest — Protection IV.
Against archers and PvP shooting: one piece — Projectile Protection IV.
Working near lava and in the Nether: Fire Protection IV on one piece; on boots, Soul Speed is more useful — movement on soul sand and soul soil speeds up.
Underwater bases and monuments: helmet with Respiration III and Aqua Affinity, boots with Depth Strider III.
Stealth and Ancient City: leggings with Swift Sneak III to quietly bypass the Warden.
Common Mistakes
Collecting multiple types of protection on one item. Protection, Blast Protection, Fire Protection, and Projectile Protection are mutually exclusive — the anvil will simply erase one of them. Combine them through different slots.
Putting specific protection on all pieces. More than 20 EPF against one type of damage has no effect. Four pieces of Blast Protection IV equal 32 EPF, 12 of which are useless.
Expecting full invulnerability. The ceiling is 80%; the remaining 20% of damage always goes through.
Applying Thorns without Unbreaking and Mending. Reflection eats up durability, and the set breaks quickly.
Conclusion
The best armor enchantments in Minecraft come down to a simple foundation: Protection IV on all pieces, Unbreaking III, and Mending for an unlimited lifespan, plus utility per slot — Feather Falling and Depth Strider on boots, Respiration and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak on leggings. Such a build gives a stable 64% damage reduction and does not need recharging, unlike the Potion of Slow Falling which acts temporarily.
Specific protection — against explosions, fire, and projectiles — is twice as strong as Protection against its own damage type, but because of incompatibility and the 20 EPF ceiling, it is applied selectively: one piece for the main threat of the scenario. Thorns is left to the player's discretion — reflection helps in defending raids and against a crowd of mobs, but costs durability.
For survival and most PvE, the universal loadout based on Protection is suitable; for specific fights — a selective replacement of one piece with specific protection.
