Silk Touch in Minecraft — a complete enchantment guide
Silk Touch is a tool enchantment that causes blocks to drop themselves instead of their usual dropped items. A pickaxe without this enchantment turns stone into cobblestone, and ore into resources; with Silk Touch in Minecraft, that same block drops intact. This opens up access to blocks that are otherwise impossible to obtain in survival mode: bee nest, ice, grass block, sea lantern. The maximum enchantment level is only I, so a «Silk Touch II» option does not exist.
Which tools can be enchanted
The enchantment works on four tools: pickaxe, shovel, axe, and hoe. The type of tool determines which block you can collect intact, because preserving the block only works when you break it with the "correct" tool.
A bee nest and beehive can be mined with any enchanted tool, but an axe will do it faster. Silk Touch cannot be applied to swords and fishing rods in normal gameplay — only through commands.

What exactly the enchantment changes
The logic is simple: the block drops itself, rather than the product of its destruction. Below are basic examples of how drops change.
Block | Drop without Silk Touch | Drop with Silk Touch |
Stone | Cobblestone | Stone |
Deepslate | Cobbled Deepslate | Deepslate |
Grass Block | Dirt | Grass Block |
Glass | Nothing | Glass |
Ice | Nothing (becomes water) | Ice |
Bookshelf | 3 books | Bookshelf |
Ender Chest | 8 obsidian | Ender Chest |
The second function of the enchantment is to pick up the block along with its state. A bee nest is transferred with the bees inside, and an infested block breaks like regular stone and does not spawn a silverfish.
How to get Silk Touch
In Java Edition, the enchantment can be found in four ways: on an enchanting table, in an enchanted book from a librarian villager, as loot from chests and structures, and from books caught while fishing. Mob drops from raids only work in Bedrock Edition.
Enchanting Table
This is the main method. The sequence of actions is as follows:
Surround the enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, leaving one empty block between them and the table — this unlocks levels up to 30.
Place the tool and lapis lazuli into the table's slots.
Choose an option from the three offered. Silk Touch has the same weight as other enchantments, so it's not directly guaranteed.
Silk Touch and Fortune share a slot and are mutually exclusive, so only one of them is offered in each set. If the desired option is not among the three, the list can be reset with a cheap enchantment.
Enchanting tip: if none of the three options suits you, enchant a book or any cheap item for 1 level and 1 lapis lazuli. The list will refresh, and Silk Touch might appear on the desired tool.

Anvil and enchanted book
If you have an enchanted book with Silk Touch, place the tool in the left slot of the anvil, and the book in the right. This method is convenient because it allows you to combine Silk Touch with other compatible enchantments on a single pickaxe — for example, with Efficiency and Unbreaking.

Librarian villagers and loot
A librarian periodically offers a Silk Touch book in their trading list. Without a discount, it costs up to 12 emeralds; after winning a raid, the price drops. A set up trading hall with several librarians makes this method the most consistent.
Enchanted books are also found in chests of dungeons, strongholds, and other structures, and can be caught with a fishing rod. Both options rely on luck, so they aren't suitable as a primary source.
Ores: preserve the block instead of the resource
Ores are the main reason why players keep a separate pickaxe with Silk Touch. Instead of the ready resource, the ore block itself drops. It can be displayed for decoration, stored compactly, or later mined with a Fortune pickaxe to get more resources.
Ore | Normal drop | Minimum pickaxe |
Coal Ore | 1 coal | Any |
Copper Ore | 2–5 raw copper | Stone |
Iron Ore | 1 raw iron | Stone |
Lapis Lazuli Ore | 4–8 lapis lazuli | Stone |
Gold Ore | 1 raw gold | Iron |
Diamond Ore | 1 diamond | Iron |
Emerald Ore | 1 emerald | Iron |
Redstone Ore | 4–5 redstone dust | Iron |
Nether Quartz Ore | 1 nether quartz | Any |
Nether Gold Ore | 2–6 gold nuggets | Any |
The pickaxe level is important: if you break diamond ore with a stone pickaxe, the block won't drop even with Silk Touch. The enchantment does not change the minimum tool level required to mine a specific ore.

Blocks that cannot be obtained otherwise
Some blocks leave nothing behind or yield only loose material when mined normally. Silk Touch is the only way to pick them up intact in survival mode.
Block | Normal drop |
Glass and Glass Pane | Nothing |
Ice, Blue Ice, Packed Ice | Nothing |
Glowstone | 2–4 glowstone dust |
Sea Lantern | 2–3 prismarine crystals |
Turtle Egg | Nothing |
Chiseled Bookshelf | Nothing |
Decorated Pot | 4 pottery sherds or bricks |
Glass and glass panes are convenient to move without loss — with a normal hit, they simply disappear. Ice and sea lanterns are often relocated for decorative lighting and ice paths.

A player with a Silk Touch pickaxe sequentially breaks several glass blocks off a wall, each drops as an item and is immediately picked up
Landscape and plant blocks
Without Silk Touch, these blocks shatter into components or turn into another material. With the enchantment, each drops exactly as it stands in the world.
Grass Block, Mycelium, Podzol — drop intact instead of dirt.
Nylium — mined with a pickaxe instead of netherrack.
Clay — drops as a block instead of 4 clay balls.
Melon — as an intact block instead of 3–7 slices.
Leaves — as a leaves block instead of random saplings and sticks.
Campfire — intact instead of 2 pieces of charcoal.
Special cases
A few blocks behave unconventionally with Silk Touch, and these situations cause the most confusion.
Bee Nest and Beehive
If you harvest an occupied nest or hive with a Silk Touch tool, 1–3 bees remain inside. Without the enchantment, the bees die, and no honey or honeycomb drops. This is the only way to safely relocate a colony to your base.

Infested block
When mined with Silk Touch, an infested block breaks like its regular version — stone or brick — and does not release a silverfish. This saves you from an unexpected enemy spawn in the mine.
Sculk family
Sculk, sculk catalyst, sculk sensor, and sculk shrieker give experience and do not drop as blocks without the enchantment. With Silk Touch, they can be collected intact, but no experience is rewarded.
Gilded Blackstone and Gravel
Gilded blackstone normally has a 10% chance to drop gold nuggets instead of itself, and gravel — a 10% chance for flint. Silk Touch removes this randomness: the block always drops itself.
What you cannot get even with Silk Touch
Certain blocks cannot be enchanted at all. Attempting to harvest them will result in nothing or a normal drop.
Block | What happens |
Monster Spawner | Yields only experience, the block itself does not drop |
Budding Amethyst | Does not drop anything |
Ominous Vault | Does not drop and cannot be moved by pistons |
Reinforced Deepslate | Does not drop anything |
Frosted Ice | Turns into water |
Powder Snow | Can only be collected with a bucket |
Farmland, Cake, Fire | Do not exist as an item |
Monster Spawner: despite the popular myth, the enchantment does not let you pick up a spawner. The pickaxe only knocks experience out of it, and the block itself is destroyed. You cannot legitimately obtain a spawner in survival.
Silk Touch or Fortune — what to choose
These are two incompatible enchantments: they cannot be combined on the same tool. The choice depends on what you need — the block itself or maximum resources.
Fortune III increases the amount of drops from ores: up to 4 diamonds or emeralds from one block, more lapis lazuli and redstone. For regular resource mining, it is more profitable. Silk Touch, on the other hand, does not multiply anything — it preserves the block.
The practical solution is to keep two pickaxes. One with Fortune for daily ore digging, the second with Silk Touch for glass, ice, special blocks, and "storing" ore for later. Ores mined with Silk Touch are later broken with a Fortune pickaxe to get increased drops from them.
For certain blocks, there are alternatives without enchantment. Powder snow is collected with a bucket, and a clay block, snow block, and melon can be crafted back together from their drops — clay balls, snowballs, and slices.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Wrong pickaxe level. Diamond, emerald, gold, and redstone ore must be broken with at least an iron pickaxe. With a stone one, you will get nothing even with the enchantment.
Wrong tool for the block. A grass block drops intact only from a shovel, stone — only from a pickaxe. If you use the wrong tool, the block will yield a normal drop or disappear.
Trying to take a spawner. A monster spawner is not collected by the enchantment — it will only drop experience. It's not worth wasting time looking for a way.
Expecting Silk Touch II. The enchantment has only one level. The anvil will not upgrade it, no matter how many books you combine.
Trying to combine with Fortune. The anvil won't let you apply both enchantments at once — they conflict. You need two separate tools.
An empty nest instead of an occupied one. If the bees fly out of the nest before the hit, you won't be able to move them. You should take down the nest at night or during the rain, when all bees are inside.
Conclusion
Silk Touch solves one specific task — to take the block intact, with all its properties. This makes it indispensable for builders who move glass, ice, sea lanterns, and grass cover, as well as for those who want to transport a bee colony without loss.
The main limitation is simple: some blocks, such as a monster spawner or budding amethyst, are unavailable under any circumstances, and the enchantment level remains the first forever. With this in mind, Silk Touch is one of the few enchantments in Minecraft that opens access to content, rather than just amplifying existing actions.
