Potion of Slow Falling in Minecraft: Brewing Guide and Usage
Guarantee safety from falls in Minecraft: how to brew the Potion of Slow Falling. Step-by-step guide, ingredients, and tips for using the…
Taking fall damage is one of the most common causes of death for players in Minecraft, especially when exploring caves, building tall structures, or fighting in the End dimension. Conventional protection methods, like the Feather Falling enchantment, only partially reduce damage and don't guarantee full safety when falling from critical heights. The Potion of Slow Falling completely solves this limitation. It reduces the player's descent speed and fully negates any landing damage from any height. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for brewing this potion and describes strategies for its use.
Preparation
To brew the potion, you must gather a specific set of tools and ingredients. You will need the following resources:
Brewing Stand: The main workstation for alchemy.
Blaze Powder: Fuel for the stand, crafted from Blaze Rods.
Awkward Potion: The base for most complex elixirs.
Phantom Membrane: The main active ingredient, obtained by hunting Phantoms.
Redstone Dust: Needed to increase the duration of the effect.
Gunpowder: Required to create the Splash Potion version.
Water Bottles: Glass bottles filled with water from any source.
Step 1. Obtaining Phantom Membrane and basic ingredients
Brewing requires gathering rare components across different dimensions of the game.
Phantom Membrane: These creatures spawn in the Overworld's night sky if a player hasn't slept for over three in-game days. To hunt them, go to an open area at night without an active sleep effect. Kill Phantoms using a bow or a sword to get the membrane.

Nether Wart: Find a Nether Fortress or a Bastion Remnant to harvest Nether Wart from Soul Sand patches.

Fuel: Defeat a few Blazes in the Nether to obtain Blaze Rods, and craft them into Blaze Powder in your inventory menu.

Step 2. Brewing the Awkward Potion
The Awkward Potion acts as the base without which it's impossible to apply the Phantom Membrane's effect.
Open the Brewing Stand interface.
Place Blaze Powder in the far left fuel slot.
Put three Water Bottles into the bottom slots of the stand.
Place one Nether Wart in the top ingredient slot.
Wait about 20 seconds for the brewing process to finish, after which the Water Bottles will turn into Awkward Potions.

Step 3. Creating the Potion of Slow Falling
Once you have the base, you can proceed to directly applying the falling effect.
Leave the three Awkward Potions in the bottom slots of the Brewing Stand.
Place one Phantom Membrane in the top slot of the stand.
After the brewing process is complete, you will receive three bottles of the standard Potion of Slow Falling with a base duration of 1:30 minutes.

Step 4. Modification and extending the effect
The potion's base duration is often insufficient for long journeys or construction. The elixir can be upgraded in two ways:
Increasing duration: Place the newly brewed Potion of Slow Falling (1:30) in the bottom slots of the Brewing Stand, and add Redstone Dust to the top slot. The brewing process will extend the effect's duration to 4:00 minutes.

Creating a splash potion: If you use Gunpowder instead of Redstone Dust, the potion will transform into a Splash Potion version. It can be thrown at your feet or at allies to instantly apply the effect in combat.
Movement physics quirks and danger in the Void: While the Slow Falling effect is active, the player's vertical descent speed is greatly slowed, leaving them vulnerable to skeleton arrows or other mob attacks, as the character essentially "hovers" in the air while falling. Additionally, this effect does not save you from falling into the Void in the End — the player will simply descend more slowly below level Y=0, where they will still take fatal void damage.
Alternatives / Variations
There are other vanilla tools to prevent fall damage:
Water Bucket MLG: Allows you to place water beneath yourself a second before landing. This method requires high accuracy and quick reaction speed, and it doesn't work in the Nether (where water instantly evaporates).
Elytra: Allows you to glide in the air and land safely, but requires progressing the game to the End City stage and consumes wing durability.
Feather Falling enchantment: Permanent passive protection on boots that reduces damage but does not protect fully when falling from great heights.
Conclusion
The Potion of Slow Falling is a reliable means of personal protection during dangerous high-altitude work and combat in Minecraft. By completely neutralizing fall damage and increasing jump distance, it makes exploring the world significantly safer.
Compared to alternatives (like the Water Bucket, which is useless in the Nether and requires perfect timing, or Elytra, which are hard to get early game), this potion guarantees safety without strict reaction requirements. It is perfectly suited for fighting the Ender Dragon, raiding End Cities, and large-scale high-altitude building projects.
