Potion of Leaping in Minecraft — recipe, jump height, fall damage reduction
Learn how to brew a Potion of Leaping in Minecraft. A complete guide on recipes, Jump Boost levels, and fall damage reduction.
The Potion of Leaping increases jump height and reduces fall damage. In Java Edition, Jump Boost I allows jumping 1 15/16 blocks high, and Jump Boost II allows jumping 2 1/2 blocks high (a normal jump is about 1 1/4 blocks). The key ingredient is a Rabbit's Foot, which drops from rabbits.
Preparation
Item / Condition | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Brewing Stand | 1 | brewing |
Blaze Powder | 1 (fuel) | stand fuel |
Water Bottle | 1–3 | potion base |
Nether Wart | 1 per batch | Awkward Potion |
Rabbit's Foot | 1 per batch | Jump Boost effect |
Redstone Dust (optional) | 1 | extension to 8:00 |
Glowstone Dust (optional) | 1 | upgrade to Jump Boost II |
Gunpowder (optional) | 1 | splash variant |
Dragon's Breath (optional) | 1 | lingering variant |
Step 1. Awkward Potion
Place a Brewing Stand and put Blaze Powder in the left fuel slot. Insert up to three Water Bottles into the bottom slots, and a Nether Wart into the top ingredient slot. After brewing, the water will become an Awkward Potion. Without a Nether Wart, you cannot brew a potion with an effect.

Step 2. Potion of Leaping (Jump Boost I)
Without removing the Awkward Potions, place a Rabbit's Foot in the top slot. You will get a Potion of Leaping (Jump Boost I, 3:00). One foot brews all three bottles at once.

Step 3. Extension or Upgrade
A brewed potion can be modified with one of two ingredients. They cannot be combined together — the second cancels the effect of the first:
Redstone Dust — extends duration from 3:00 to 8:00, the effect remains Jump Boost I.

Glowstone Dust — upgrades to Jump Boost II (2 1/2 blocks jump), duration drops to 1:30.

Do not add a Fermented Spider Eye: it turns a Potion of Leaping into a Potion of Slowness (−15% speed). The conversion cannot be undone, you will have to dump the bottle.
Step 4. Splash and Lingering Variants
Any brewed Potion of Leaping can be modified for throwing and area of effect:
Gunpowder turns the potion into a splash potion. It can be thrown, the effect applies to everyone in the splash radius, and the duration is reduced by about a quarter.
Dragon's Breath in a splash potion creates a lingering potion — it leaves a cloud that grants Jump Boost to anyone standing in it.
Jump Height and Fall Damage
Jump Boost not only increases jump height but also reduces fall damage: every level of the effect subtracts 1 block from the fall distance when calculating damage.
Level | Jump Height | Fall Damage Reduction |
|---|---|---|
No effect | ~1 1/4 blocks | — |
Jump Boost I | ~1 15/16 blocks | −1 block |
Jump Boost II | ~2 1/2 blocks | −2 blocks |
The fall damage reduction only works up to Jump Boost 15. At extreme levels of the effect (from commands, e.g., Jump Boost 34), the player jumps so high that the fall damage exceeds the compensation limit and kills them upon landing.
Conclusion
Jump Boost II for 1:30 is useful for parkour and climbing vertical locations — it allows you to jump 2 1/2 blocks high without ladders. Jump Boost I for 8:00 is more practical for prolonged exploration of mountainous biomes, where the peak is less important than the duration and the side effect of fall damage reduction. Unlike the Potion of Slow Falling, which merely cushions the landing, Jump Boost provides active vertical movement upwards. The limitation is that the effect does not scale horizontal jump distance as much as vertical, so for long flights over a chasm it is less reliable than sprinting momentum.
Q&A
What is needed for a Potion of Leaping? A Brewing Stand, Blaze Powder (fuel), Water Bottles, Nether Wart for an Awkward Potion, and a Rabbit's Foot for the effect.
Where to get a Rabbit's Foot? It drops from rabbits with about a 10% chance. There are no other reliable sources for brewing.
How to make a Jump Boost II potion? Add Glowstone Dust to a brewed Potion of Leaping. The jump will increase to 2 1/2 blocks, but the duration will drop from 3:00 to 1:30.
Does Jump Boost reduce fall damage? Yes. Every level subtracts 1 block from the fall distance when calculating damage, up to Jump Boost 15.
How many blocks does a player jump with Jump Boost? Jump Boost I — about 1 15/16 blocks, Jump Boost II — 2 1/2 blocks (a normal jump is about 1 1/4 blocks).
