The Potion of Luck is a potion that applies the "Luck" effect, increasing the chance of better loot from loot tables that account for luck. It only exists in Minecraft Java Edition: it cannot be brewed in normal survival, so the base potion is obtained via command or from the creative inventory. This guide shows how to get all three variants of the potion, how they work, and where the effect actually makes a difference.

What Does the Luck Effect Do

Luck increases the player's luck attribute by +1 for each level. This attribute affects loot tables that are configured to account for luck: the higher it is, the greater the weight of higher-quality entries and the lower the weight of entries with a penalty. Currently, this mechanic is only utilized by fishing.

On the water, the effect is noticeable immediately. With active "Luck", the treasure category (enchanted book, saddle, nautilus shell) drops more often, and junk drops less. The increase stacks with the "Luck of the Sea" enchantment on a fishing rod, so together they provide the highest chance for a valuable catch.

Nuances 

Luck is only calculated for the player: throwing a splash or lingering potion at a mob for better drops is pointless — the effect does not influence its loot. Do not confuse the increase with the "Lure" enchantment: it only reduces the time until a bite, while leaving the quality of the catch the same. Negative levels yield the opposite result and decrease luck, like the "Bad Luck" effect. Splash and lingering versions can also be loaded into a dispenser — convenient for auto-dispensing the effect to players at server events. 

How to Get the Base Potion

The base Potion of Luck lasts 5:00 and cannot be brewed. It can be obtained in two ways.

Using a command (Java Edition 26.2):

/give @p minecraft:potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:luck"}] 1

In the creative inventory, the potion is found among other potions — it is taken directly, without commands.

If only the effect is needed without the item, it can be applied via a separate command. Example for 10 minutes, level I:

/effect give @p minecraft:luck 600 0

Splash and Lingering Versions

Although the base potion cannot be brewed, it is used to prepare the splash and lingering potions in a brewing stand.

A splash potion shatters against the ground or a target, applying the effect to everyone within the blast radius. A lingering potion creates a cloud on the ground after a second: anyone standing in it receives "Luck", but the overall duration is shorter.

Arrows of Luck

The lingering version unlocks another item — the Arrow of Luck. Recipe: eight regular arrows around the perimeter of a crafting table and one lingering potion in the center yield eight crafted arrows.

Hitting a target with such an arrow applies the effect for 37 seconds — the fastest way to grant "Luck" from a distance.
