Dynamic Trees Plus — a mod for expanding dynamic vegetation in Minecraft
Minecraft version the article was tested and written on: 1.21.1
Range of supported versions: 1.16.4 – 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20 – 1.20.1, 1.21.1
Dependencies: Dynamic Trees
Dynamic Trees Plus is the official extension of the Dynamic Trees mod for Minecraft that adds dynamic vegetation beyond trees. In vanilla Minecraft, cacti grow as straight three-block columns, and large mushrooms only appear via bone meal on a vanilla sapling or in mushroom fields. The extension replaces this with structures that grow gradually, differ in shape, and have distinct species for different biomes.
Cacti
The mod adds several species of cactus. Three of them are named and clearly differ in shape and spawn biome.
Saguaro — a massive cactus ported from the Dynamic Trees version for Minecraft 1.12.2. It spawns in Badlands. When mature it forms fruit — you can harvest and eat it once the fruit opens.
The pillar and tube cacti are smaller species that populate ordinary deserts. They differ in trunk shape and branching and add variety to the typical desert landscape.
Behavior
The behavior has been changed compared to vanilla. By default, dynamic cacti:
deal damage only when the player moves toward them — standing right next to them is safe (behavior close to a sweet berry bush);
do not destroy items that fall onto them.
Both of these can be reverted to vanilla via the config file.

Large mushrooms
Large mushrooms are available from Minecraft 1.18.2 and above. These are red and brown mushrooms that grow from a cap gradually, like trees in the base mod, and fall over when chopped.
Harvesting
with Silk Touch on the axe, mushroom stem and cap blocks drop;
without Silk Touch the player only gets the vanilla mushroom item.
Mega variants
Mega mushrooms are enlarged versions of the large mushrooms. Ways to obtain them:
Natural spawning in mushroom fields — there they appear alongside the regular variants.
A potion of gigantism applied to the soil beneath an already grown mushroom.
Atmospheric details
Spore particles occasionally appear beneath large mushrooms. The cap blocks are springy — a fall cushions the impact, roughly like slime.

Configuration
The config is split into two files in the config/ folder. The common file describes mushroom behavior, and the server
file describes cactus behavior. The default values are chosen so that the mod works right after installation without editing.
The dynamictreesplus-common.toml file
Parameter | What it does |
| When true, vanilla mushroom saplings are immediately replaced with dynamic ones the moment they are placed on a block. When false, no replacement happens at that moment. Works only if replaceVanillaSapling = true in the config of the base Dynamic Trees mod. |
| When true, a vanilla mushroom sapling is replaced with a dynamic one at the moment it would have grown into a vanilla large mushroom. When false, the mushroom grows by vanilla logic. Depends on the same condition replaceVanillaSapling = true. |
The dynamictreesplus-server.toml file
Parameter | What it does |
| When true, bone meal speeds up cactus growth. When false, the cactus does not respond to bone meal. |
| When true, only moving toward the cactus deals damage. When false, any contact deals damage, like a vanilla cactus. |
| When true, items that fall onto the cactus are destroyed (vanilla behavior). When false, they lie on it without loss. |
Conclusion
Dynamic Trees Plus closes the gap left by the base mod: vanilla cacti and mushrooms look archaic next to dynamic trees. The extension replaces them with plants that have the shape, behavior, and character of their biome. Suitable for survival with an emphasis on a natural-looking world.
Installation
A typical installation takes about 5 minutes. The flow is the same; only the loader and the matching build differ.
