Spartan Shields — A combat mod adding a large number of new shields and defensive gear in Minecraft

Spartan Shields adds over two dozen new shields made from various materials to Minecraft — from wooden to netherite, obsidian, and modded ones. Vanilla provides the player with just one shield. This mod builds a fully-fledged defense progression tree: a corresponding shield appears at every armor tier, plus it introduces an active mechanic — the Shield Bash.

Two types of shields

The mod introduces two parallel branches. The regular shield matches the vanilla model in size and behavior: it blocks attacks and is held in the off-hand. The tower shield is larger and more durable, with a default durability multiplier of 1.25×. A banner can be applied to the wooden tower shield just like a vanilla shield, leaving room for server heraldry.

Upgrade path

The starting point is a Crude Wooden Shield or a Wooden Tower Shield, which is crafted separately on a crafting table.

Subsequent shields are crafted as a direct upgrade: the Crude Wooden Shield goes in the center, surrounded by 4 units of the new material for the regular variant or 6 for the tower shield.

Shield bash

The core mechanic of the mod is the Shield Bash. While blocking, press the attack key, and your character will perform a shoving strike. The damage is minimal, but the move serves a different purpose.

It doesn't replace your primary weapon. Its role is crowd control: when surrounded by zombies or skeletons, the bash knocks back everyone around you, giving you a second to retreat or switch weapons.

Special effects

Some shields provide an additional effect upon an enemy's contact with the blocking shield or when striking. Without any additional mods:

• Silver Shield — deals damage to undead attacking the shield while blocking

• Obsidian Shield — increased knockback resistance for the player, but with a movement speed penalty

If the modpack includes modded metals — bronze, steel, tin, nickel, lead, and others — the mod automatically enables separate recipes for them using vanilla item tags. Any mod adding, for example, bronze ingots with the c:ingots/bronze tag, will unlock the bronze shield recipe without extra configuration. Certain magical or thermal materials yield shields with custom effects on the enemy upon blocking — slowing, weakening, or applying other effects.

Shields from other mods' materials

Shields for modded alloys are always registered in the game, regardless of the source mod's presence. Without the required mod, such a shield is visible in the creative inventory and JEI/EMI with a red "Uncraftable" tooltip — the recipe is inactive because there are no corresponding ingots with the vanilla tag in the game. As soon as any mod adds such ingots under the standard tag, the recipe activates automatically.

Among vanilla shields, only the obsidian one has a distinct effect — increased knockback resistance for the player at the cost of a movement speed penalty. The rest of the shields with custom effects are modded.

The configuration file is located at config/spartanshields-common.toml and can be opened with any text editor. Below are the parameters that actually make sense to change; the full file also contains blocks with durability settings for each modded material separately.

Spartan Shields adds a progression system for shields. The player gets a linear upgrade tree from wood to netherite, a parallel branch of tower shields with banner support, and an active Shield Bash mechanic. It is ideal for survival, RPG modpacks, and melee-focused setups — anywhere the vanilla shield acts as a bottleneck for progression.
