Tectonic is a mod that completely rewrites Overworld terrain generation in Minecraft: instead of the mostly flat vanilla landscapes, the world is shaped into large continents with extensive mountain ranges, deep oceans, and underground rivers. Vanilla generation rarely produces mountains hundreds of blocks high and doesn't connect rivers underground — this mod solves exactly that, making the landscape vertically larger and more interconnected for traveling.
Continents, islands, and oceans
In the third version, land is gathered into continental masses. Continents stretch for thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of blocks wide — this scale is needed to fit long mountain ranges and new terrain types. Between continents lie oceans, and within them — individual islands up to a thousand blocks in size. Islands use vanilla mountain terrain shapes, so enclosed mountain rings can be found on them.
Oceans are noticeably deeper than vanilla: the deepest areas reach the Deepslate layer. In deep oceans, the seafloor is more diverse — with overhangs, depressions, and trenches instead of a flat surface. In the mod version, Ocean Monuments are lowered by 30 blocks to compensate for the increased depth and prevent them from hovering above the seabed.

Mountain ranges
The main terrain feature of Tectonic is its extensive mountain ranges. They stretch for tens of thousands of blocks and rise almost to the build limit. The height and thickness of the ranges depend on the vertical generation scale, so in an appropriately configured world, individual peaks can exceed 500 blocks.

Underground rivers and lava tubes
Where mountains are too high for a normal riverbed, the river does not abruptly end but goes underground. Underground sections connect with regular surface rivers, ensuring the water route is uninterrupted — you can traverse through the mountain range by boat via a tunnel. The shape and size of these rivers vary greatly: from narrow passages to tall halls where the ceiling rises higher than the river's width; stone pillars often appear inside, and entrances can be noticeably taller than they are wide. In the mod version, underground rivers are densely covered with Glow Lichen, and occasionally feature hanging lanterns that provide natural lighting.
Even deeper underground, the "lava" relative of underground rivers generates — narrow tunnels with lava instead of water. They are rarer than water ones, have uneven walls, and fewer safe spots, making them more of a dangerous discovery than a convenient route.

Special terrain shapes
Besides ranges and oceans, the mod adds several recognizable landscape forms:
Jungles occasionally feature massive stone pillars up to a hundred blocks tall and higher.
Badlands form very large canyons that can be traversed completely.
Deserts are mostly covered by smooth sand dunes.
In certain areas, two- and three-tier plateaus generate; some have gentle "ramps" so they can be climbed in survival mode. Independent plateaus also appear in Badlands — unattached to adjacent riverbeds.
Some Cherry Groves and Pale Gardens, conversely, end up surrounded by plateaus and turn into valleys.
Some forests, Jungles, and Taigas generate close to sea level, featuring frequent ponds and small lakes.

Mod or datapack
Tectonic is distributed in two formats, and the terrain generation is identical in both. The difference lies in configuration convenience and a few minor details. The mod version features a config file and an in-game settings screen, lowers Ocean Monuments to match the increased depth, raises the snow generation level in cold biomes (so the tops of tall trees aren't covered in snow), and adds Glow Lichen and lanterns to underground rivers. In the datapack version, these same parameters are accessible only through manual editing of the pack files, and the aforementioned minor details from the mod version are absent. Both formats work in single-player and on servers.
Config
The mod has many parameters, so only the main setting groups are listed below. The full list with explanations can be found on the in-game config screen or in the config/tectonic.json file.
Group | What it does | Examples of what can be changed |
| Basic toggle settings |
|
| Vertical scale and world limits |
|
| Land shape, erosion, rivers | scale of continents and erosion; enabling underground rivers and river lanterns; jungle pillars; gentle hills |
| Water depth and monuments | depth of normal and deep oceans; shifting of ocean monuments; removing ice from frozen oceans |
| Islands in oceans | enabling islands, their size and frequency |
| Biome distribution | temperature and humidity noise scale and offset — affects the size of hot or wet biome zones |
| Caves | separate toggles for "cheese", "spaghetti", and "noodle" caves and their size; the depth at which caves drop off below the surface; lava tubes |
Changes in the config primarily affect newly generated areas of the world. For already generated chunks, modifications generally do not apply retroactively, so it's best to configure generation before creating the world.
Conclusion
Tectonic makes the Overworld terrain vertically massive and cohesive: tens of thousands of blocks long mountain ranges, deep oceans, and underground rivers that allow you to travel across ranges by boat without breaking your route. Suitable for survival play with a grander landscape, exploration maps, and screenshots when you want mountains and oceans noticeably larger in scale than in vanilla.
Installation
A typical installation takes about 5 minutes. The flow is the same; only the loader and the matching build differ.
