YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses rebuilds Minecraft's Nether Fortress into three distinct zones, adding depth while keeping vanilla mob spawns and loot.

Minecraft version: 1.21.4
Mod version: 3.4.1
Dependencies: Cloth Config API, YUNG's API
YUNG's Better Nether Fortresses reworks the vanilla Nether Fortress. It adds a structure built from three zones: a network of bridges over lava lakes, a central Citadel full of traps and hidden rooms, and Lava Halls that run deep beneath the fortress itself. Each zone has its own architecture and its own type of loot. Mob spawning logic stays vanilla — farms work exactly like in the standard game.
Fortress Structure
Every generated fortress consists of three zones that differ in placement, geometry, and danger level.

Bridge Network
The outer part is a branching network of bridges over lava. Unlike the vanilla parallel corridors, this network runs in several directions and includes two unique elements: a shelter (a small enclosed outpost) and a tower. It's at bridge level that the fortress becomes visible from a distance.

Citadel
The fortress's central structure. A building made of nether bricks with rooms, staircases, and corridors. Most of the treasure rooms and spawners are located here. The internal layout is non-linear — several routes lead to the same rooms, along with dead ends and vertical transitions between floors.

Lava Halls
The underground part beneath the fortress's main Citadel. The halls run deep and sit right next to lava lakes. The layout is maze-like — unlike the Citadel, there are no vertical landmarks to help you retrace your direction. There is no natural light.

Mobs and Spawners
Blazes and Wither Skeletons spawn under vanilla rules: Blazes near spawners, Wither Skeletons within the structure at light level 0–7. Vanilla Blaze and Wither Skeleton farms built in the new fortresses work the same as in the standard game.
Loot
Chests use the vanilla Nether Fortress loot table — the contents are predictable, nothing new compared to the standard game. The advantage is purely quantitative: more chest rooms in a single structure cuts down the time between runs.
Compatibility
The mod generates new fortresses in any Nether biome, including ones added by third-party world-generation mods. No conflicts with Nether biome mods have been documented.
The structure adapts to the terrain of the biome it generates in — no visible artifacts appear at the border with a non-standard biome. The mod makes no changes to mob spawning tables outside the fortress and does not affect the generation of other Nether structures.
Conclusion
The vanilla Nether Fortress is one of the simplest large structures in the game in terms of complexity and geometry. Better Fortresses gives it real depth through three zones with different exploration paces. The Lava Halls are the one part vanilla doesn't cover at all.
The main limitation is navigation. The Citadel's non-linear layout, with no clear axis of movement, means that on your first visit it's easy to waste a lot of time looking for the right rooms or the way out. In a vanilla fortress the corridors are predictable — here they aren't. For players deliberately farming Blazes or Wither Skeletons, this is a one-time problem: after a few visits the structure becomes familiar. For those who go in once for progression, it demands more attention than vanilla.
Well suited to survival builds where exploring structures is part of the gameplay. For speedruns or builds where the Nether Fortress is needed purely as a source of blaze rods, the structure's size creates more obstacles compared to vanilla.
Installation
A typical installation takes about 5 minutes. The flow is the same; only the loader and the matching build differ.
