Rethinking Voxels is a Minecraft shader pack built on top of Complementary Reimagined, keeping its overall visual style. The main difference is colored block lighting, where every light source casts sharp, well-defined shadows. The pack's author rewrote the lighting system so torchlight, lava glow, and lantern light behave closer to reality: each keeps its own color and no longer bleeds through walls.
Colored Block Lighting
In vanilla, any light source illuminates the sphere around it with the same flat tone and passes straight through obstacles. Here, each source casts light in its own color. A torch gives a warm orange glow, soul fire a cold blue one, lava floods a cave in orange. Color spreads out from the source and blends on nearby surfaces, so a room with several different lamps gets natural transitions between hues.
This works through a voxel representation of the scene: space is divided into small voxel cells, each of which "knows" its distance to the nearest light sources. Thanks to this, light is distributed precisely instead of as a rough blob.

Sharp Shadows From Light Sources
Besides color, block lighting also casts crisp shadows. A pillar in front of a torch produces a clearly defined shadow edge, and light no longer "leaks" through the block. This is achieved through traced visibility checks: the pack calculates whether a ray from the source actually reaches a surface. In dungeons and dark rooms this noticeably changes the look, since the lighting behaves like the real thing.

Brightness flicker: the lighting system produces periodic sharp changes in brightness. This is a side effect of the method itself, and it can't be fully removed without losing the sharp shadows from light sources or tanking your FPS.
Performance
The pack is positioned as fast compared to fully path-traced shaders, but heavier than the base Complementary Reimagined — most of the extra cost comes from calculating shadows for every light source. The more light sources in the frame, the harder your framerate drops: an open area carries a lighter load than a base or cave packed with torches.
Conclusion
Rethinking Voxels solves one specific problem: it brings colored block lighting with sharp shadows to Minecraft, something the base Complementary Reimagined doesn't offer. The price is higher GPU demands and occasional brightness flicker. If you want maximum FPS and a stable image for PvP or survival, plain Complementary Reimagined is the better fit; if atmosphere in dungeons, screenshots, and realistic light behavior matter more, the gri573 build covers exactly that scenario. The effect is most noticeable in caves, mineshafts, and dark interiors, where colored light and shadows do their most striking work.
